Discover Gaithersburg

Gaithersburg was settled in 1765 as a small farming community called Log Town, near today's Summit Hall, on Ralph Crabb's 1725 land grant called Deer Park. Henry Brookes bought the northern part of the grant and built his brick house, Montpelier, beginning with a log cabin built between 1780 and 1783. Benjamin Gaither built his home on the land in 1802, married Brookes's daughter Margaret in 1807, and the couple inherited part of the Brookes land. By the 1850s residents called the place Gaithersburg.

More about Gaithersburg

The Forest Oak Post Office, named for a large tree, opened in Gaither's store in 1851. On July 10, 1864, more than 10,000 Confederate troops camped overnight in the area, including today's Bohrer Park, after marching a day from Frederick following the Battle of Monocacy, and the next day they moved on in an unsuccessful attempt to take Washington. When the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad came through in 1873, its station, designed by Ephraim Francis Baldwin as one of his well-known Victorian stations in Maryland, was named Gaithersburg, the first official use of the name. Rapid growth followed, the town was incorporated on April 5, 1878, and it boomed in the late 19th century with new churches and schools. Sources Wikipedia: Gaithersburg, Maryland
