Discover Lynn

Native Americans lived in the Lynn area for thousands of years before English colonization. At the time of contact it was the land of the Naumkeag under the powerful sachem Nanepashemet, whose territory stretched from the Mystic to the Merrimack rivers. Colonists did not make a legal agreement with the Naumkeag for the land until 1686, after smallpox in 1633, King Philip's War and missionary efforts had greatly reduced their numbers. In 1675 the Naumkeag sachem Wenepoykin joined Metacomet in King Philip's War.

More about Lynn

Edmund Ingalls began European settlement in 1629, and John Tarbox of Lancashire followed in 1631. The area was first incorporated as Saugus, the Massachusett name for it, and settlers built a large mill between today's Sluice and Flax ponds. The town was renamed Lynn for King's Lynn in Norfolk, England, in honor of its first minister, the Rev. Samuel Whiting, who came from King's Lynn in 1637. Several new towns were later carved from it: Reading in 1644, Lynnfield in 1782, Saugus in 1815, Swampscott in 1852 and Nahant in 1853. The City of Lynn was incorporated on May 14, 1850. Colonial Lynn was an early center of tanning and shoemaking, which began there in 1635, and the town made boots for soldiers of the Continental Army during the Revolution.
