Discover Frankfort

Frankfort probably got its name from an event in the 1780s, when Native Americans attacked settlers from Bryan Station on their way to make salt at Mann's Lick. The pioneer Stephen Frank was killed at the Kentucky River, and settlers called the crossing Frank's Ford, later shortened to Frankfort. In 1786 James Wilkinson bought 260 acres on the north bank of the river, which became downtown, and promoted the town as a capital, expecting farm goods to be shipped down the Kentucky River to the Ohio, the Mississippi and New Orleans.

More about Frankfort

After Kentucky became the 15th state in 1792, five commissioners were appointed on June 20, 1792, to choose a capital: John Allen and John Edwards of Bourbon County, Henry Lee of Mason, Thomas Kennedy of Madison and Robert Todd of Fayette. Several towns competed, and early histories say Frankfort won with an offer that included Andrew Holmes's log house as the capitol for seven years, town lots, fifty pounds' worth of locks and hinges, ten boxes of glass, 1,500 pounds of nails and $3,000 in gold. Frankfort had a post office by 1794, with Daniel Weisiger as postmaster, and on October 1, 1794, he sent the first quarterly account to Washington. The Virginia lawyer and statesman John Brown built his home in the town. Sources Wikipedia: Frankfort, Kentucky
