Discover Bowling Green

The first Europeans known to reach the area carved their names in beech trees near the river around 1775, and by 1778 settlers had built McFadden's Station on the north bank of the Barren River. Bowling Green grew from homesteads built by Robert and George Moore and General Elijah Covington. Accounts of the name differ. The city points to the first meeting of the county commissioners in 1798, which named the town Bolin Green after the Bowling Green in New York City, where patriots pulled down a statue of George III and melted it into bullets. The Encyclopedia of Kentucky says it may instead come from Bowling Green, Virginia, home of early migrants, or from a ball-alley game played by Robert Moore.

More about Bowling Green

By 1810 the town had 154 residents. Steamboat trade on the Barren River raised its importance, a toll road to Cloverport on the Ohio River was built in 1821, locks and dams made the river more navigable, and in 1832 a portage railway, with mules pulling the cars, connected the river to the site of the present courthouse. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad came through in 1859. Bowling Green declared itself neutral in the Civil War, but both sides wanted its river and railroad. On September 18, 1861, about 1,300 Confederate soldiers under General Simon Bolivar Buckner occupied the city, surprised by its pro-Union feeling, and fortified the surrounding hills. In November 1861 the provisional Confederate government of Kentucky made Bowling Green its capital. On February 14, 1862, after Grant captured Forts Henry and Donelson, the Confederates withdrew, destroying bridges, the depot and other buildings. Sources Wikipedia: Bowling Green, Kentucky
