People have lived in the Evansville area since at least 8000 BC. The most complex of the ancient sites is Angel Mounds, built and occupied from about AD 900 to about 1600 and abandoned between 1400 and 1450. Later the Miami, Shawnee, Piankeshaw, Wyandot and Delaware were known in the area, and French hunters and trappers came from their base at Vincennes. The Delaware gave up the land to Governor William Henry Harrison of Indiana Territory in 1805.
More about Evansville
On March 27, 1812, Hugh McGary Jr. bought about 441 acres on a bend of the Ohio River and named it McGary's Landing. In 1814, to attract settlers, he renamed it Evansville for Colonel Robert Morgan Evans. Evansville was incorporated in 1817 and made the county seat on January 7, 1818, of a county named for Henry Vanderburgh, a late judge of the territorial supreme court. Set on a meander of the Ohio, it is often called the Crescent Valley or River City.
River trade made Evansville a thriving commercial town, and it soon spread beyond its original bounds. For many years its west side was cut off from the rest of the city by Pigeon Creek and the factories that grew up along it.
