Discover Cedar Rapids
The site of Cedar Rapids lay in the territory of the Meskwaki and Sauk when white settlers arrived. The first settler was Osgood Shepherd, who built a log cabin he called a tavern on the Cedar River, then called the Red Cedar, in 1837 or 1838, at what is now First Avenue and First Street Northeast. He was a squatter with no title and a reputed ne'er-do-well who at least kept company with horse thieves. He drove off another squatter, Wilbert Stone, who had platted a town called Columbus to the south, and sold Stone's cabin. When he tried the same with Robert Ellis on the west bank, Ellis, who was chopping wood, warned that someone would be dead if Shepherd did not back off.
More about Cedar Rapids
The true founders were George Greene, a surveyor, Nicholas Brown, a miller, and a few others, who saw that Shepherd's spot beside the last rapids before the Cedar joins the Iowa River was ideal for a mill. In 1841 they bought out Shepherd and platted a town called Rapids City. Brown's first crude dam washed out, so Greene brought in Alexander Ely, an engineer from Michigan, to build a proper dam and mill race able to power several mills. A village called Kingston, for David King, who ran a rope ferry, grew up on the west bank.
The Iowa legislature incorporated the town as Cedar Rapids on January 15, 1849, named for the rapids of a river named for its red cedars. It had fewer than 400 people. During the 1850s the town grew and gained a substantial Czech population.
