Discover Hogansville

Hogansville, in Troup County, is named for William Hogan, born January 20, 1804, who established a plantation in the 1830s covering much of the present town. When he gave the railroad its right-of-way in 1849, he required that a depot be built where the line crossed the old Augusta Highway. After his death in 1861, his son-in-law John Pullin sold the land for homes and businesses, and Hogansville was chartered in 1870. The original Hogan house burned in 1899, and his granddaughter Eugenia Pullin Word built a Victorian house on nearly the same spot in 1901.

More about Hogansville

On September 15, 1897, Isaiah H. Lofton, Hogansville's Black postmaster, was shot in an assassination attempt after leaving the post office in the town's Black business district, known as "Cross Town." White residents had boycotted the post office to resist his federal appointment. Attacks on Black federal officials, such as this one and the murder of South Carolina postmaster Frazier Baker and his family, may have helped lead to the founding of the National Afro-American Council in 1898, a forerunner of the NAACP. Since 1998 the city has held an annual Hummingbird Festival.
