Aragon, in Polk County, was named for local deposits of the mineral aragonite. A post office has operated there since 1899, and the city was incorporated in 1914.
During the Atlanta campaign of the Civil War, a spring near Aragon, Peek's Spring, was a Union camp. Major General Grenville M. Dodge's 16th Corps of McPherson's Army of the Tennessee camped there on May 23, 1864, on its way from the Etowah River to Dallas, and Brigadier General Jefferson C. Davis's division of the 14th Corps camped there the next night on its way from Rome. They were part of the right wing of Sherman's army moving to outflank Joseph E. Johnston's Confederates at Allatoona, which led to ten days of battle at New Hope Church and Dallas. The city was later home to the Aragon textile mill, now closed and abandoned. On March 15, 2008, an EF3 tornado struck the northern part of Aragon, killing two people.
