Fortson, a community along the line between Harris and Muscogee counties north of Columbus, was originally called Blanchard's Crossing. Thomas and Elizabeth Almond settled in the area in the 1830s with her orphaned brother, Thomas Daniel Fortson. A prominent farmer, Fortson built a Greek Revival cottage in 1858, with outbuildings and cotton terraces, and ran a gristmill on nearby Heiferhorn Creek during the Civil War. The Fortson House has stayed in the family and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
More about Fortson
In 1885 the Columbus and Rome Railroad built a station on Fortson land, and the community was renamed Fortson. That year Thomas Willis Fortson, the builder's son, became station agent and postmaster and opened the Fortson General Store; from 1904 the store and post office were in a brick building beside the tracks, and Luther Getzen Fortson ran them until 1963. Across the tracks, the Getzen House was built in 1882 for T. W. Fortson's sister, and Samuel Luther and Fannie Mealing Getzen organized the Getzen Memorial Baptist Church there in 1904.
