Saint Augustine's historic center is best understood as several periods of history occupying the same street plan. Pedro Menendez established the Spanish settlement in 1565, but not every building that looks colonial survives from that founding era. The city's own history distinguishes surviving structures from later reconstructions. The narrow streets and plaza provide continuity even where individual buildings have changed.
The central plaza brings different civic and religious histories together. The National Park Service identifies the Constitution Obelisk from 1814, the public market from 1824 and Trinity Episcopal Church from 1825 among the district's landmarks. Their dates show why the center should not be read as a single frozen Spanish-colonial scene. Later communities added their own institutions within the inherited town layout. North of the plaza, the Castillo de San Marcos connects architecture to local geology. Construction began in 1672 and the initial work was completed in 1695. Its coquina came from Anastasia Island: a shell-rich stone whose behavior under cannon fire differed from harder, more brittle masonry. The fort's material is therefore part of its story, not merely its appearance. The city's history and National Park Service district information offer useful ways to separate original fabric, reconstruction and later additions. They also keep attention on the town itself, rather than reducing the place to one founding date or one landmark.
