Discover Lake City

Lake City, the seat of Columbia County, lies in country where Hernando de Soto's expedition met the northern Utina, part of the western Timucua, in 1539, and where Spanish missionaries later founded Santa Cruz de Tarihica. In the 18th century a Seminole town called Halapata Telofa, "Alligator Town," stood here; a February 1821 Army report noted that its chief had recently died. Its most famous resident, Halpatter Tustenuggee, or Chief Alligator, led Seminole warriors in the Second Seminole War of 1835 to 1842 against removal west.

More about Lake City

After 1821 American settlers formed a settlement beside the Seminole town and called it Alligator. Following the 1823 Treaty of Moultrie Creek the Seminole residents moved to the Peace River reservation, and when Columbia County was formed in 1832 Alligator became its seat. During the Second Seminole War Fort Alligator, also called Fort Lancaster, stood in what is now downtown, and by 1845 the last Seminole had left or been forcibly removed. Lake City men of Company C, Florida Volunteers, served in the Mexican War in 1847. A railroad from Jacksonville reached the town in November 1858, and in 1859 Alligator was incorporated and renamed Lake City, with M. Whit Smith as first mayor; legend says the mayor's wife refused to hang her lace curtains in a town called Alligator. In the Civil War the railroad carried beef and salt to Confederate troops, and the 8th Florida Infantry was mustered in at Lake City in the summer of 1862. Sources Wikipedia: Lake City, Florida
