Fleming Island, on the western shore of the St. Johns River in Clay County, was settled by George Fleming, an Irish immigrant who lived from 1760 to 1821 and received a 1,000-acre land grant from the Spanish governor of East Florida for his military service. In 1790 he founded a plantation called Hibernia, the Latin name for Ireland, in what is now the community of Hibernia, and at his death it passed to his son, Colonel Lewis Michael Fleming.
In 1942, when the area was still undeveloped, the U.S. Navy built four asphalt runways and established Naval Outlying Field Fleming Island as an auxiliary to Naval Air Station Jacksonville. The Navy abandoned it in the 1960s because the runways were too short for jets, and in the late 1990s the crumbling runways were removed for housing. Fleming Island is now largely a bedroom community for Jacksonville. Sources Wikipedia: Fleming Island, Florida
