Plant City, in eastern Hillsborough County, was first called Ichepuckesassa, after the Native village that once stood there; a 1929 marker recalls the Echebucsassa post office four miles north. In 1860 the community was renamed Cork, after the postmaster's Irish hometown.
By 1863 the Confederate army faced severe food shortages, and Captain John T. Lesley was commissioned to recruit a company of pioneer men from the Ichepucksassa, or Cork, area, many too young or too old for regular service, to round up Florida's wild cattle and drive them north to railheads. With eight other Florida companies, this "Cow Cavalry" drove cattle as far as Charleston. The town took the name Plant City to honor Henry B. Plant, whose South Florida Railroad greatly boosted trade in the farming community, and it was incorporated on January 10, 1885. In 1911 it was reincorporated as the City of Plant City. From 1988 to 1997 the Cincinnati Reds held spring training at Plant City Stadium.
