Lakeland's downtown was planned around the relationship between railroad, park and commercial development. The 1884 Munn Survey included streets, a passenger-depot site, a city park and a hotel footprint. Munn Park was set aside for public use that year and served as a town square for gatherings as well as a first impression for arriving rail passengers.

More about Lakeland

The city's library history follows the hotel site at Main Street and Massachusetts Avenue from the early Tremont House to the Terrace Hotel, built in 1924. That succession connects the first planned town center with the much larger ambitions of Florida's land-boom years. It also shows how the same location could remain significant while its buildings changed. Lake Mirror contributes another period of civic design. Architect Charles Leavitt designed its promenade, dedicated in 1928. Beyond downtown, the Southgate Shopping Center arch represents a different commercial era: architect Donovan Dean designed the steel landmark built in 1957. These places illustrate why Lakeland's architectural history extends beyond nineteenth-century buildings. The History Room's collections, municipal walking tour and preservation resources provide starting points for comparing the railroad town, the boom-era lakefront and postwar roadside design. Each reflects a different way the community organized movement, public space and commerce.
