Shell mounds dating from about 750 to 1500 CE record Jaega settlement near the city, now called Lake Worth Beach. Among the first non-native settlers were Samuel and Fannie James, an African American couple reported to have been formerly enslaved, who settled on the Lake Worth Lagoon in 1885. A monument gives the date as 1883, a transcription error. Their land grew from 187 acres to more than 700, and Fannie served as postmaster of the Jewel post office from 1889 to 1903. After Samuel died in 1909, Fannie sold most of the rest to the Palm Beach Farms Company, keeping a small farm outside the new town, as the segregation rules of the 1913 charter required.
More about Lake Worth
After Flagler's railroad came through in 1896, the developers Bryant & Greenwood sold farm lots, mostly in present Greenacres, each with a small town lot. They wanted to call the town Lucerne, but the Post Office refused because another Lucerne existed, so it became Lake Worth. In July 1912 it had 38 people, and by that December 308 residents and 125 houses.
