Discover Santa Cruz

People have lived in the Santa Cruz region for at least 12,000 years. Before the Spanish came in the late 18th century, it was home to the Awaswas, an Ohlone people of no more than 1,000 whose territory ran from just north of Davenport to Rio Del Mar. Their language is extinct, surviving only in the place names Aptos, Soquel and Zayante and in the word abalone. The local Uypi tribe called the area Aulinta.

More about Santa Cruz

The Portola expedition, still looking for the port of Monterey that Sebastian Vizcaino had described in 1602, forded the river, probably near today's Soquel Avenue bridge, and camped nearby on October 17, 1769. The Franciscan Juan Crespi wrote that "this river was named San Lorenzo." The next morning, five hundred steps on, they crossed a running stream that they named El Arroyo de la Santisima Cruz, "the stream of the most holy cross." In 1791 Father Fermin Lasuen kept Crespi's name when he founded La Mision de la Exaltacion de la Santa Cruz, Mission Santa Cruz, the twelfth mission in California, to convert the Awaswas of the village of Chatu-Mu and nearby Ohlone villages. The stream itself later lost the name and is now called Laurel Creek, because it runs alongside Laurel Street. Sources Wikipedia: Santa Cruz, California
