Discover Madera

Madera was founded in 1876 as a lumber town at the end of a flume built by the California Lumber Company, and its name is Spanish for "wood." In October 1876 the company's president, William H. Thurman, auctioned the first lots, and Captain Russell Perry Mace built the first building, the Yosemite Hotel, for travelers bound for Yosemite Valley. A sixty-mile wooden V-flume carried rough-cut lumber from Sierra Nevada sawmills to the railroad planing mill in town. The first boards came down in 1877, the year the post office opened, but that year's drought dried the flume and left lumber unsold, and the company went bankrupt by 1878.

More about Madera

The San Jose banker Return Roberts bought its assets and reorganized them as the Madera Flume and Trading Company, and shipments resumed by 1880. A fire in 1881 destroyed the lumberyards, which were rebuilt. Roberts and other leaders lobbied for a separate county, and Madera County was created from part of Fresno County on May 16, 1893. Madera was incorporated as a city on March 27, 1907. On May 8, 1899, the Michigan lumberman Arthur Hill, Elmer H. Cox and Roberts founded the Madera Sugar Pine Company, which bought the flume and vast timberlands, rebuilt and lengthened the flume and added logging railroads. By 1900 the flume ran about 60 to 65 miles, one of the longest in the world, and thousands celebrated its completion with a citywide barbecue on October 27, 1900. At its height Madera was one of the West's major lumber centers, its mill producing up to 50 million board feet a year. Sources Wikipedia: Madera, California
