Indigenous peoples lived in the Jonesboro area for thousands of years, and at the time of European contact the historic tribes there included the Osage, Caddo and Quapaw. The name of the state of Arkansas comes from the Quapaw language. French and Spanish traders and trappers dealt with these peoples, and after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 American settlers came to explore, hunt, trap and trade in the area.
More about Jonesboro
In 1859 land was taken from Greene, Mississippi and Poinsett counties to form Craighead County, and Jonesboro was designated its county seat, with Lake City later named a second seat as population grew in the west of the county. The town, with 150 residents in 1859, was named for State Senator William A. Jones in recognition of his support for creating the county. It was first spelled Jonesborough, later shortened to its present form.
In March 1881, after the murder of a young woman on a farm near town, four Black men were arrested and bound over to a grand jury, and on the night of March 12 a masked mob of 200 to 300 men broke into the church where they were held under guard about 8 miles north of Jonesboro and hanged them. A newspaper of the time called the event one of the blackest pages in the annals of the region.
