Courtland, in Lawrence County, is said to stand on the site of a Cherokee village, and Big Nance Creek through town is named for a Cherokee chief who lived there when settlers arrived. The settlement, first called Ebenezer, drew wealthy planters from Virginia, Tennessee, the Carolinas and Georgia, and it took its name from the federal courthouse and land office located there. In 1818 the Courtland Land Company bought the townsite and divided it into lots, and the territorial legislature incorporated the town on December 13, 1819. The Gaines Trace and the Byler Road both passed through.
The Tuscumbia, Courtland and Decatur Railroad, one of the South's earliest, was organized at Courtland in 1831 and chartered the next year, routed to bypass the dangerous Muscle Shoals of the Tennessee River; it later became part of the Memphis and Charleston and then the Southern Railway. In 1835 Courtland physician Jack Shackelford raised a volunteer company for the Texas Revolution, the "Red Rovers," named for their red uniforms. Mexican forces captured them at Coleto in March 1836, and most were killed in the Goliad massacre; Shackelford was among the few survivors. In 1944 and 1945 Courtland was home to the Courtland Army Air Field, later given to the town as its airport. In the early 1990s more than 100 buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Courtland Historic District. Sources Wikipedia: Courtland, Alabama
