Discover Midland

Midland was founded in June 1881 as Midway Station on the Texas and Pacific Railway, named for its position halfway between Fort Worth and El Paso. Because Texas already had other towns named Midway, it became Midland in January 1884, when it got its first post office. It became the seat of the new Midland County, separated from Tom Green County, in March 1885, and by 1890 it was one of the state's most important cattle-shipping centers. Midland was incorporated in 1906 and had a fire department and new water system by 1910.

More about Midland

The discovery of oil in the Permian Basin in 1923, when the Santa Rita No. 1 well came in in Reagan County, followed by the Yates field at Iraan, transformed the town. Midland became the administrative center of the West Texas oil fields. During World War II it had the nation's largest bombardier training base. A second boom followed the war with the development of the Spraberry Trend, still the country's third-largest oil field by total reserves, and another came with high oil prices in the 1970s. The Permian Basin now produces a fifth of the nation's oil and gas. In 2006 the boom left almost 2,000 more jobs in the basin than workers to fill them. John Howard Griffin wrote a history of the city, Land of the High Sky, in 1959. Sources Wikipedia: Midland, Texas
