From the early 18th to the mid-19th century the Wichita and Comanche lived in the Wichita Falls area, part of what the Spanish called Comancheria. The Wichita were forced onto a reservation in Oklahoma after 1859, the last battle with the Comanche in the area took place in 1872, and they were finally defeated in 1874. Anglo Americans began arriving in the 1860s.
More about Wichita Falls
The town was platted and named Wichita Falls on September 27, 1876, for a waterfall on the Wichita River, and town lots were sold that day at what is now Seventh and Ohio streets. The first permanent resident arrived in 1879. A flood destroyed the original falls in 1886, and in 1987 the city built a 54-foot artificial waterfall beside the river in Lucy Park. The Fort Worth and Denver City Railway arrived in September 1882, the year the town became the seat of Wichita County, and the city grew west from the depot, in what is now the Depot Square Historic District.
Much of the city's growth into the 20th century came from the work of Joseph A. Kemp and his brother-in-law Frank Kell, pioneers in food processing, flour milling, railroads, cattle, banking and oil. The Newby-McMahon Building, built downtown in 1919 and known as the world's littlest skyscraper, was featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not.
