Discover Mckinney

McKinney and Collin County are both named for Collin McKinney, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. In 1848 McKinney was made the county seat because the first seat, Buckner, was not within three miles of the county's center. On March 24, 1849, William Davis, who owned 3,000 acres on the site, donated 120 acres for the townsite. The town was incorporated that year and again in 1859, and it adopted the commission form of government in 1913.

More about Mckinney

McKinney grew little until the Houston and Texas Central Railroad arrived in 1872. Then it became the main commercial center of Collin County, and over the next 50 years the county became one of the top producers of corn, wheat and oats in Texas. Cotton mattered too, and three new gins built between 1870 and 1876 brought the town's total to four. Work began on the Old Collin County Courthouse in 1874. The Collin County National Bank and a telephone exchange opened in 1883, and electric lights came in 1889. Plano passed McKinney in population by 1970. McKinney grew from 15,193 people that year to 21,283 in 1990 and by the mid-1980s had become a commuter town for Plano and Dallas. Growth then sped up sharply, to 54,369 people in 2000 and 131,117 in 2010, and a later estimate put the population at 187,802 at the start of 2019. Sources Wikipedia: McKinney, Texas
