Evidence of settlement in the area goes back 10,000 years, and Nacogdoches stands on or near Nevantin, the main village of the Nacogdoche, a Caddo people from whom the town takes its name. The area remained a Caddo settlement into the early 19th century. In 1716 Spain founded Mision Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe there, the first European construction in the area. After France left the region in the 1760s, Spanish officials judged the missions too costly and in 1772 ordered the settlers, including Adaesenos from Los Adaes, to move to San Antonio, some of them forced out by soldiers.
More about Nacogdoches
In the spring of 1779 the Spanish trader Antonio Gil Y'Barbo led a group back to Nacogdoches, which Spain designated a pueblo that summer. As lieutenant governor, Y'Barbo set its rules and laid out streets centered on the crossing of El Camino Real and La Calle del Norte, and he built a stone house for his trade, later called the Old Stone Fort, which became a gateway from the United States to the Texas frontier.
Nacogdoches has flown under nine flags, the six flags of Texas plus those of the Magee-Gutierrez Republic, the Long Republic and the Fredonian Rebellion. Americans began settling there in 1820, and Texas's first English-language newspaper was published there, though a Spanish-language paper came earlier. In 1832 settlers united at the Battle of Nacogdoches in support of federalist government and drove the Mexican army from East Texas. Thomas Jefferson Rusk, a hero of San Jacinto, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and one of Texas's first two U.S. senators, was among its leading early settlers.
