Discover Lufkin

Anglo settlers began arriving in Angelina County by 1820, among them the Burris family. In 1881 the site of Lufkin was a small settlement called Denman Springs. A legend says the Houston, East and West Texas Railway's surveyors got rowdy in a saloon at Homer, then the county seat, were arrested, and that their angry chief ordered the line to bypass Homer and run through Denman Springs, on the land of Lafayette Denman and his son, Dr. A. M. Denman, who had hosted them. The story is probably untrue, since the railroad's 1879 prospectus already routed the line around Homer.

More about Lufkin

Lufkin was founded in 1882 as a stop on the railroad and named for Abraham P. Lufkin, a Galveston cotton merchant and city councilman and father-in-law of the railroad's president, Paul Bremond. The railroad advertised lots, and many businesses and professionals moved from Homer to be near the tracks. Early stores, including S. Abram's general store, Joseph Kerr's grocery and saddle shop and W. H. Bonner's general store, stood on Cotton Square, where cotton was stored behind the depot for shipping. A post office opened in 1882 under William A. Abney, a telegraph line to Nacogdoches followed in 1883, and the town was incorporated on October 15, 1890, with J. M. Smith as first mayor. Lufkin's history is often divided into the railroad era of 1882 to 1890, the timber boom that followed and a later golden era of expansion, with the lumber industry driving much of its growth.
