The Shawnee and other Native peoples lived at the head of the Ohio River, and the Lenape town of Shannopin's Town stood on the Allegheny in today's Lawrenceville. La Salle may have been the first European to reach the area, in 1669, and fur traders set up posts after 1717. In 1753 and 1754 the British hastily built Fort Prince George at the forks, but a larger French force drove them off and built Fort Duquesne. The French and Indian War began here. General Edward Braddock, with Major George Washington as his aide, was defeated on his way to the fort, and General John Forbes finally took the forks in 1758. He began Fort Pitt, named for William Pitt the Elder, and the settlement was called Pittsborough. During Pontiac's War, Native forces besieged Fort Pitt in 1763 until Colonel Henry Bouquet won the Battle of Bushy Run.

More about Pittsburgh

The Penns bought the region from the Iroquois under the 1768 Treaty of Fort Stanwix, but Virginia and Pennsylvania both claimed it until 1780, when extending the Mason-Dixon line placed Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. Pitt Township, the first civilian local government, was created on April 16, 1771. Thomas Vickroy drew the town plan in 1784. The Pittsburgh Gazette began in 1786, and federal troops were sent during the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. Boat building for Ohio settlers was an early industry, glassmaking began by 1797, and Meriwether Lewis bought the keelboat for the Lewis and Clark Expedition here in 1803. The War of 1812 cut off British goods, and by 1815 Pittsburgh was making large amounts of iron, brass, tin and glass. It became a city on March 18, 1816. In the 1830s Welsh ironworkers from Merthyr arrived, beginning the city's long rise as an iron and steel center. Sources Wikipedia: Pittsburgh
