Discover Johnstown

Europeans settled the Johnstown area in 1770. In 1800 the Swiss German immigrant Joseph Johns, born Josef Schantz, laid out the town as Conemaugh Old Town. It was first known as Schantzstadt, soon anglicized to Johnstown. From the period after the Civil War well into the 20th century, the Industrial Revolution brought manufacturing, iron and coal mining and the rise of the steel industry, and the jobs drew migrants from the South and immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe.

More about Johnstown

Johnstown has suffered three major floods. On May 31, 1889, during heavy rains, the earthen South Fork Dam 14.1 miles upstream collapsed, and at least 2,209 people died in the Johnstown Flood and the fire that swept through the wreckage. Another major flood struck in 1936, and despite President Franklin D. Roosevelt's pledge to make the city flood-free and the work that followed, a third came in 1977. The city has five national historic districts: Downtown Johnstown, Cambria City, Minersville, Moxham and Old Conemaugh Borough. Individual National Register listings include the Grand Army of the Republic Hall, the Cambria Iron Company, the Cambria Public Library building, Nathan's Department Store and the Johnstown Inclined Plane.
