Melville, a hamlet on Long Island, was known to Native Americans as Sunsquams. In the 17th century it was called Samuel Ketcham's Valley, after one of its earliest residents, and later Sweet Hollow, probably for the many honeybees and the honey found in its trees. A Presbyterian church was built in 1829 at Old Country and Sweet Hollow roads. It was used until 1930, reopened in 1944 for the funeral of Edward Baylis and has been in use since, and in 1977 it was moved a mile west.
In 1909 a trolley line to Huntington was built as an extension of the Huntington trolley spur, with a fare zone at the Duryea Farm in Melville, but it closed a decade later after farmers complained that its noise frightened their animals, and buses took its place. In the 1950s Melville, Dix Hills, Wyandanch and the Sweet Hollow area proposed incorporating as a single 50-square-mile village to be called Half Hollow Hills, but the plan failed. Office development along Route 110 grew through the 1960s, though by 1971 a slowing economy left many buildings vacant. Sources Wikipedia: Melville, New York
