When Europeans arrived, the Ithaca area was controlled by the Cayuga of the Iroquois Confederacy, and Jesuit missionaries from New France had a mission to them as early as 1657. In the 18th century the Saponi and Tutelo, driven from Virginia and North Carolina, joined the Confederacy under the Cayuga and settled on Cayuga hunting lands at the south end of Cayuga Lake. During the Revolution, four of the six Iroquois nations sided with the British, and the Sullivan Expedition of 1779 destroyed more than 40 Iroquois villages and their winter stores, including the Tutelo village of Coreorgonel just south of Ithaca. Most Iroquois were forced out of the state after the war, and the state sold their lands for settlement.
More about Ithaca
Native Americans kept a temporary hunting camp at the foot of Cascadilla Gorge. In 1788 eleven men from Kingston came with two Lenape guides to explore the area, and the next year Jacob Yaple, Isaac Dumond and Peter Hinepaw returned with their families and built log cabins. Abraham Bloodgood of Albany obtained a patent for 1,400 acres covering today's downtown west of Tioga Street. From 1790 the Central New York Military Tract granted land in the region to Continental Army veterans, and most local land titles trace to those grants.
The state surveyor general Simeon De Witt moved to the settlement, then known variously as The Flats, The City or Sodom, and he or his clerk Robert Harpur renamed it Ithaca, after the Greek island home of Ulysses, in keeping with the classical names given throughout the Military Tract, whose township here was named Ulysses.
