Discover Astoria

Astoria, a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens, was first called Hallett's Cove, for William Hallett, who settled there in 1652 with his wife, Elizabeth Fones, on land granted by Peter Stuyvesant that stretched from the East River to about 29th Street. After a widespread Native attack in 1655, Stuyvesant ordered settlers in isolated areas into villages, and the Halletts moved to Flushing for some years. In 1664, the year New Amsterdam became New York, Hallett bought a large tract from local Native Americans that extended his land to present Steinway, and the English recertified his Hell Gate Neck tract in 1668. The Halletts remained leading landholders until the early 1800s.

More about Astoria

Hallett's Cove stayed a rural outpost through the 1700s and was occupied by the British for most of the Revolution, and regular ferry service to Manhattan began in 1782. In 1814 Fort Stevens was built at Hallett's Point to guard Hell Gate during the War of 1812, with Castle Bogardus inland, the first permanent buildings in what became Astoria. By 1836 a village of 20 to 30 houses stood there, and wealthy New Yorkers built summer homes along the shore in what became Astoria Village, now Old Astoria. In 1835 the fur merchant Stephen Halsey moved to the area, laid out streets, bought the ferry and built a turnpike to Flushing along today's Astoria Boulevard. In 1839 he sought to incorporate the village and, hoping for a $2,000 donation for a female seminary, offered to name it for his associate John Jacob Astor. Astor gave only $500, but the name Astoria stayed. Sources Wikipedia: Astoria, Queens
