Santa Fe's plaza is more than a scenic center: it connects Indigenous place history, colonial government and long-distance travel. The city's account recognizes Tewa presence before the establishment of the Spanish capital in 1610 and continuing connections with Tesuque Pueblo. The Spanish town plan was therefore one chapter in an already inhabited landscape, not the beginning of human history there.
More about Santa Fe
The plaza became a setting for civic activity, commerce and travel. National Park Service historic-trails material relates it to the Santa Fe Trail, the Old Spanish Trail and El Camino Real. Those routes connected the city in different directions and periods. Thinking about them together helps explain the plaza's importance as a meeting point rather than simply an architectural enclosure.
On its north side, the Palace of the Governors has changed with the governments and communities around it. Built as an administrative building in 1610, it passed through the Pueblo Revolt era, Mexican rule, the United States territorial period and statehood. It became a museum home in 1909, before New Mexico entered the Union in 1912. Its fabric was altered over the centuries; its long history does not mean every visible feature is unchanged from the seventeenth century.
The city plaza study, the museum's building history and the federal trail resources offer different ways into this layered history: place and community, government and architecture, and movement across the wider region.
