Discover Newark
Connecticut Puritans from the New Haven Colony, led by Robert Treat, settled Newark in 1666 as a religious community meant to be governed by the faithful, though newcomers with different ideas soon changed that. The Newark Tract was purchased on July 11, 1667. The origin of the name is uncertain. It may come from Newark-on-Trent in England, where the first pastor, Abraham Pierson, may have served. Pierson is also said to have wanted the town called "New Ark," for a new Ark of the Covenant, and some settlers took it as "New Work." The form "New Ark" still appears in letters as late as 1787.
More about Newark
Newark was organized as a township on October 31, 1693, received a royal charter on April 27, 1713, and was incorporated as one of New Jersey's first 104 townships on February 21, 1798. Springfield, Caldwell, Orange, Bloomfield and Clinton townships were later carved from it. British troops raided the town several times during the Revolutionary War. Newark was reincorporated as a city on April 11, 1836, after a referendum on March 18, and it annexed the borough of Vailsburg on January 1, 1905.
The city grew enormously with industry and immigration through the 19th and early 20th centuries. After World War II many white residents moved to the suburbs of western Essex County, and racial tension and decline culminated in the 1967 Newark riots. About 100,000 white residents left during the 1960s, and the population fell by more than a third between 1950 and 2000, before revitalization projects began in the 1990s.
