The Vicksburg area was long part of the territory of the Natchez, whose language was unrelated to the Muskogean languages of their neighbors, and other cultures had lived on this strategic ground for thousands of years before them. The first European settlers were French colonists who built Fort Saint Pierre in 1719 on the bluffs above the Yazoo River at present Redwood and traded furs and started plantations. On November 29, 1729, the Natchez attacked the French settlements around present Natchez, killing several hundred settlers, and in the war that followed the French, aided by the Choctaw, defeated and scattered the Natchez and their Yazoo allies. The Choctaw took over the area and ceded nearly 2 million acres to the United States in the Treaty of Fort Adams in 1801, the first of a series of treaties that led to the removal of most Choctaw by 1830.
In 1790 the Spanish built a military post on the site called Fort Nogales, "walnut trees," which the Americans renamed Walnut Hills after taking possession in 1798. The village was incorporated in 1825 as Vicksburg, named for Newitt Vick, a Methodist minister who had founded a mission there, and it had about 3,000 people, including some twenty Jewish immigrants from Bavaria, Prussia and Alsace-Lorraine. During the Civil War, Vicksburg's bluffs commanding the Mississippi long resisted Union assault. Its surrender by Confederate General John C. Pemberton on July 4, 1863, after a siege, together with Lee's defeat at Gettysburg the day before, is traditionally seen as the war's turning point. The city remained under Union occupation until 1865, and it did not regularly celebrate the Fourth of July again until 1947. Sources Wikipedia: Vicksburg, Mississippi
