Shuqualak, in Noxubee County, was settled after the Choctaws signed the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek in September 1830, their last treaty with the United States, which gave up most of their remaining land in Mississippi. The treaty ground lies about five miles north of town. The town's name is said to come from a Choctaw word meaning "beads."
A post office opened in 1855, and by August 1856 the Mobile and Ohio Railroad had built through Shuqualak. Nearby, the Summerville Institute, founded in 1845 by T. L. Gathright, was the only secondary school still operating in Mississippi during the Civil War. It closed in 1876; Gathright later became state superintendent of education and the first president of Texas A&M College. In 1885 a fire burned much of downtown Shuqualak.
