Seminary keeps alive the name of a school. On the site of today's town, Presbyterian pastor A. R. Graves opened Zion Seminary, a coeducational boarding school, in 1845 or 1846 (sources differ). It offered training in law, medicine, religion and fine arts, and at its largest it had more than 500 students living in dormitories and cottages. During the Civil War all but one of its buildings burned, and the school operated until it burned again in 1890.
In the late 1800s lumber companies cut the virgin timber of the Piney Woods, and new towns sprang up along the railroads. Seminary's population boomed, and residents petitioned the state for a charter, granted in 1899. They chose the name Seminary to remember Zion Seminary, and the Seminary Attendance Center school now stands on the old seminary grounds. Okatoma Creek, part of the Pascagoula River watershed, runs through town.
