Newton, in Newton County, grew as Newton Station on the railroad between Vicksburg and Meridian. On April 24, 1863, during Grierson's Raid, Union cavalry under Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson struck the station, tore up the tracks and burned the depot. The Battle of Newton's Station was part of the long Vicksburg campaign, in which General Ulysses S. Grant sought to take the river fortress and split the Confederacy.
That same year Willis R. Norman received a Confederate government contract to build a hospital at Newton. The complex is said to have had seven hospital and commissary buildings, and about 1,000 Confederate soldiers were treated there, of whom about 100 died. On February 13, 1948, an F3 tornado struck the town, killing five people and destroying 30 homes.
