The area was occupied by Native peoples for thousands of years, and French explorers met the Natchez in the region. The present Greenville is not the first Mississippi town of that name. An earlier Greenville near Natchez, unrelated except in name, was the seat of Jefferson County from 1803 to 1825 and is now a ghost town.
More about Greenville
Migrants from the East and the Upper South came to the area seeking land for cotton plantations, and it became a trading center for the region's plantations, while the Indian Removal Act of 1830 led to the forced removal of most of the Southeast's tribes in the following decade. When Washington County lost land to the new Issaquena County in 1844 and needed a new seat, the planned town of Greenville was designated, and it became the county seat when it was founded in 1847, after the earlier seats at New Mexico and Princeton along the Mississippi. William W. Blanton was granted the federal land that now forms most of downtown. The town was named for General Nathanael Greene, a friend of George Washington, for whom the county was named. Before the Civil War it was a thriving hamlet, enriched by the profits of the surrounding cotton plantations, which depended on the labor of enslaved Africans.
