Wiggins, the seat of Stone County, is named for Wiggins Hatten, father of Madison Hatten, one of the area's first homesteaders. It grew on the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad in the timber boom, and on March 26, 1904, Governor James K. Vardaman proclaimed it an incorporated town. From 1902 to 1929 its main industry was a sawmill built by the Finkbine family of Iowa, whose Finkbine Lumber Company had its headquarters here. To make use of the cutover land, the Finkbines started the American Pickle and Canning Company, and Wiggins became known as the "Pickle Capital of the World," at one time home to the world's largest pickle plant.
Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on January 21, 1910, a fire that began in a lodging house and was driven by strong northwest winds destroyed 41 businesses, more than half the business district, along with the railroad depot. With no fire department or waterworks, residents fought it with bucket brigades and dynamite, and afterward downtown was rebuilt in brick. In 1916 Stone County was created from the northern third of Harrison County in a vote on May 8, named for Governor John Marshall Stone; Wiggins won the county seat, and the first county officers took office on June 5, 1916. On June 22, 1935, a mob of 200 white people lynched R. D. McGee, a Black man accused of attacking a white girl; although 17 participants were identified, the Justice Department took no action. The pickle plant has since closed, but timber still supports many local businesses.
