Picayune takes its name from a newspaper, which took its name from a coin. The picayune was a Spanish coin worth half a real, or one-sixteenth of a Spanish dollar, and the word came to mean something of little value. In late 1883 or early 1884 the town was named by Eliza Jane Poitevent Nicholson, a former local resident who owned and published the New Orleans Daily Picayune. Nicholson, who wrote poetry as "Pearl Rivers," was a pioneer in opening journalism to women.
More about Picayune
Picayune grew as a lumber and tung-oil center and was incorporated in 1904. In 1940 Donald H. Robertson painted the mural Lumber Region of Mississippi for the local post office under the federal government's New Deal art program; it was later covered over.
Picayune is now the largest city in Pearl River County. When Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, its eyewall passed over the city, and high winds damaged roofs, windows and thousands of trees, but because the damage was less severe than nearby, Picayune became a temporary home for many people displaced from New Orleans and the Mississippi coast.
