Pascagoula takes its name from the Pascagoula people, whose villages stood along the Pascagoula River some distance above its mouth; the name is usually translated as "bread eater." Hernando de Soto seems to have made the first contact with them in the 1540s, and the French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville described the region on an expedition in 1700. Among the first European settlers were Jean Baptiste Baudreau dit Graveline and Joseph Simon de La Pointe. The coast passed from France to Britain in 1763 and to Spain during the American Revolution. In 1810 residents joined the short-lived Republic of West Florida, and on May 14, 1812, the area was officially added to the Mississippi Territory; Jackson County was created on December 18, 1812.
The railroad shaped the modern city. The neighboring town of Scranton, incorporated in 1870, grew into the county's population and business center, and the county seat moved there from Americus in 1871. Pascagoula was incorporated as a village in 1892 and became a city in 1901, and the two towns combined as Pascagoula by governor's proclamation in 1904 and by act of the legislature in 1912. Today's downtown is old Scranton. Shipbuilding grew during World War I, and in 1938 Robert Ingalls of Ingalls Iron Works in Birmingham founded Ingalls Shipbuilding on the Pascagoula River. Using the then-revolutionary all-welded method, its workers built more than 60 ships during World War II, and the yard later turned to submarines and Navy warships. In October 1973 two co-workers, Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker, claimed they were abducted by aliens while fishing near the river, drawing national attention; the city placed a historical marker at the site in June 2019. On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina's 20-foot storm surge devastated Pascagoula along with the rest of the Mississippi coast.
