Discover Quincy

The Old Coast Road from Boston to Plymouth through Quincy began as a Native American trail. The Massachusett sachem Chickatawbut had his seat on Moswetuset Hummock, near the mouth of the Neponset River, which Myles Standish and Squanto visited in 1621. In 1625 a party led by Captain Richard Wollaston set up a post on a hill near Quincy Bay, on land the Native people called Passonagessit and had largely cleared, and named it Mount Wollaston; the Wollaston neighborhood keeps his name. After Wollaston left for Virginia, Thomas Morton took over, renamed the post Ma-re-Mount and angered Plymouth with his free-living ways. Standish arrested him in 1627 and sent him to England, and the Merrymount neighborhood takes its name from his settlement.

More about Quincy

The area was part of Dorchester from 1630, was briefly annexed by Boston in 1634 and became Braintree in 1640, and from 1708 its North Precinct took the shape of modern Quincy. In 1792 it was incorporated as a separate town, named for Colonel John Quincy, maternal grandfather of Abigail Adams, and it became a city in 1888. Known as the City of Presidents, it is the birthplace of John Adams and John Quincy Adams and of John Hancock, first signer of the Declaration of Independence. For more than a century Quincy had a thriving granite industry, served by the Granite Railway, the country's first commercial railroad, and shipbuilding at the Fore River Shipyard was another mainstay. The Old Colony Railroad of 1845 began its growth as a suburb, and Howard Johnson's and Dunkin' Donuts were both founded in Quincy in the 20th century. Sources Wikipedia: Quincy, Massachusetts
