Discover Framingham

Before English settlement the Nipmuc lived around Framingham, with encampments along Washakamaug, "eel fishing place," now Farm Pond. They managed deer and beaver, fished the ponds and streams and grew corn, beans and squash in the nearby hills, and the Old Connecticut Path, an ancient trail, ran through the area. Disease and violence reduced their numbers sharply after the Puritans arrived, and many were forced into praying towns such as Natick.

More about Framingham

The first European settler, John Stone, set up a farm on the west bank of the Sudbury River in 1647. In 1660 Thomas Danforth, an official of the Bay Colony, received a grant at "Danforth's Farms" and went on to gather more than 15,000 acres. During King Philip's War in 1675 and 1676, tensions ran high. The Nipmuc leader Tantamous of Nobscot Hill, who resisted Christianization, was arrested with his family in 1676 and held on Deer Island, and he later escaped, was recaptured and was hanged on Boston Common. In January 1676, in a dispute over a corn harvest, Mary Eames and five children were killed at the Eames homestead. The town was named Framlingham after Danforth's hometown in England, though why the L was dropped is unknown. Danforth resisted incorporation, which came in 1700, after his death. On February 22, 1775, British spies sent by General Thomas Gage stopped at Buckminster's Tavern and watched the militia muster, and in April Framingham sent about 130 men to the battles of Lexington and Concord.
