Discover Chicopee

The name Chicopee comes from the Nipmuc language, probably from chekee, "violently," with a suffix used in water place names, or from chikkupee, "of red cedar." In 1636 William Pynchon bought land from the Agawam east of the Connecticut River and moved from Roxbury to found Springfield, the first settlement in the territory that includes today's Chicopee Center, once called Cabotville. According to the local historian Charles J. Seaver, the area above the falls was first settled in 1660. The district of today's Chicopee Center and Chicopee Falls was called Nayasett, Nipmuc for "at the small point," and the upper settlement above the falls was Skipmuck.

More about Chicopee

The first industry on the river was a sawmill built in 1678 by Japhet Chapin, John Hitchcock and Nathaniel Foote at Skenungonuck Falls, now Chicopee Falls. In 1786 James Byers and William Smith of Springfield leased land there on condition that they build an iron foundry, which Benjamin Belcher had acquired and expanded by 1805. Belcher sold water rights along the river to the Boston Associates, including Jonathan and Edmund Dwight, and with water power and cast iron, Chicopee Falls grew into a factory village making textiles, arms and farm tools. Between 1823 and 1841 the Boston Associates founded four textile companies and built two power canals, and by 1856 these had consolidated into the Chicopee Manufacturing Company and the Dwight Manufacturing Company. By 1875 nearly one in four residents worked in cotton manufacturing. The General Court approved Chicopee's incorporation as a town, separate from Springfield, on April 25, 1848, and Governor George N. Briggs signed the act on April 29.
